Christophorus — "The King is Dead, Long Live the King" In the 1959 issue #34 German edition (#17 English Edition) of Christophorus magazine there was a brief article on the new "Convertible" model. The car used in the photos was the 85501 prototype. Click an image below to see a full size page scan. The text of the article, translated from the German, reads: "The King is Dead, Long Live the King" Which king is dead? Yes, they have layed the Speedster to rest but replaced it with a new, considerably improved, body form. The new king's name is "Convertible". The Porsche Convertible combines a low, streamlined form retained from the Speedster, with increased comfort. The new type has a high, curved windshield for panoramic effect, which means a better view of road and scenery. The top is arched somewhat higher than before and has a large rear window in the interests of driving safety. Most important, the Porsche Convertible received wind-up side windows and recessed side pockets for storing carnets, maps etc. You can buy the new type with the 1600 Normal and the 1600 Super motor. The prices? The Porsche Convertible with the 1600 Normal motor costs 12650 DM in Germany (or about 3000 dollars). This means that prices overall are 50 DM (about 12 dollars) under coupé prices.
